Italy celebrate 40th

The Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) and the Italian Embassy in Beijing held a reception here Wednesday evening to mark the 40th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties.

Senior Chinese legislator Uyunqimg and visiting Italian President Giorgio Napolitano attended the reception.

Uyunqimg, vice chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, said since China and Italy forged diplomatic ties in 1970, the two sides had enjoyed increasingly mature political ties, and scored progress in such areas as economy, science and technology, environmental protection, culture, education and agriculture.

Noting the activities under the title of "Year of Chinese Culture" had been unveiled in Italy this October, Uyunqimg said China was ready to take the opportunity of the events to push forward bilateral ties to a new high.

Napolitano said Italy attached great importance to the development of Italy-China relationship, and expressed his willingness to contribute to bilateral ties.

China and Italy set up a comprehensive strategic partnership during Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's official visit to Italy in May 2004.

Statistics show that in the first five months of 2010, bilateral trade reached 15.96 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 34.3 percent year-on-year. hoping zhongguo hong viese

boost in Peru

Peruvians are ecstatic after Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature last week.

Sales of Vargas Llosa's books have skyrocketed in bookstores across the country. Moreover, a cultural week was announced in his honor to promote the reading of his works.

Javier Ochoa, a manager of a bookstore in Arequipa, said that sales of Vargas Llosa's books have quadrupled after he won the Nobel Prize. "We sell some 25 of his books by day," he said.

"There were people who did not know him (Vargas Llosa) in the past, but with his winning this award, people will read more and we will sell more," a book seller in Lima said.

The Education Ministry has announced it will promote the reading of Vargas Llosa's works in all schools nationwide, including the initiation of a program called the Reader's Plan to encourage students to read one book each month.

The Culture Ministry announced Sunday it would host a cultural week to pay homage to Vargas Llosa and support creating a national award with his name. prejudice cgeis geialgei xbiwnabd geoznge
